Trading on international stock exchanges
Forex trading can take place almost around the clock. When the European stock exchanges are closed, the time difference allows trading in the US or Asia. However, many traders focus on the important and well-known stock exchanges in the world. Therefore, one speaks of four trading hours (Sydney time, Tokyo time, London time and New York time). You can trade on these important stock exchanges between the opening of the stock exchange and the close of the stock exchange. In the United States , the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq electronic stock exchange open at 9:30 a.m. local time, i.e. 3:30 p.m. Central European Time. Trading ends at 4:00 p.m. local time (10:00 p.m. CET).
The world's largest stock exchange
The Atlanta-based exchange operator IntercontinentalExchange is for the NYSE, the largest stock exchange in the world. It is based on the famous Wall Street in Manhattan. Therefore, the terms NYSE and Wall Street are often used interchangeably. But Wall Street is not only home to one of the most important stock exchanges in the world, but also numerous companies from the financial sector.
Over 200 years of history on Wall Street
The history of the stock exchange dates back to 1790 when the then government of the United States issued a $ 80 million government bond to finance its debt from the War of Independence. This bond was the first step towards securities trading in the US. Two years later, investors were able to acquire shares in what is now Bank of New York Mellon on Wall Street. Commerce grew and as early as 1793 investors met on Wall Street every day. Nevertheless, it took more than 20 years before the first set of rules was established. In 1817, the New York Stock & Exchange Board (NYS & EB) was founded and a statute was passed. After a test phase, a new statute came into force in 1820. The name New York Stock Exchange established itself in the early 1860s.
Inventions on the road to success
The invention of the telegraph was a great one Step in the development of the stock exchange. For the first time, investors from other areas were also able to participate in trading. When the telephone was also invented a few decades later, communication with London was much quicker. At this time the first stock market ticker was developed. So you could inquire about the prices on Wall Street every day all over the world.
An important milestone was the development of the Dow Jones in 1896. At the beginning there were only twelve stocks listed, today it's the 30 largest companies in the United States. The index is still the leading index of the NYSE. Today, on the New York Stock Exchange, which itself has been listed on the stock exchange since 2006, several billion shares per day are traded.
Cooperation with Nasdaq
In 2003, the NYSE cooperated with its biggest competitor to date: the Nasdaq. The National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations, Nasdaq for short, is the largest electronic exchange in the United States. It was founded in 1971 by the National Association of Securites Dealers as a fully electronic trading platform and is located near Times Square in New York. Nasdaq has been operated by the Nasdaq OMX Group, Inc since 2008. The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is responsible for controlling the exchange.
Extended trading hours
Also on the Nasdaq can be from 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. O'clock local time. Before that, the "pre-market session" is offered from 7 am to 9.30 am and in the evening from 4 pm to 8 pm, the "after-market session". Trading on the Nasdaq takes place via the Electronic Communications Network (ECN). 50 percent of all US file companies are listed on the largest American stock exchange. Around two billion shares are traded daily.
In addition to the Dow Jones, the NYSE Composite, the Nasdaq Composite and the Standard & Poor's indices play a major role. All companies listed on the NYSE are listed in the NYSE Composite, which is published by NYSE Euronext and updated every second during trading hours on the NYSE. The NYSE Composite is designed as a price index. The weighting is based on the market capitalization of the represented companies.
Index of the Nasdaq
in the Nasdaq Composite, the largest share index on the Nasdaq, over 3,000 values are represented, including mainly technology files such as Amazon or Microsoft. The price index is updated every second during trading hours on the Nasdaq and reflects the development of all values on the Nasdaq. The 100 stocks with the highest market capitalization from the Nasdaq Composite are also combined in the Nasdaq-100.

together with Dow Jones Utility Average good leading indicator
In combination with the Dow Jones Utility Average, it is considered good leading indicator. The Dow Jones Utility Average primarily lists stocks of utilities that are not very prone to fluctuations. The Nasdaq Composite, on the other hand, mainly contains more volatile technology stocks. This combination can give important indications for the development of the entire market.
Significant indices from Standard & Poor's
An important role in the NYSE and the Nasdaq play the Standard & Poor's indices. The S&P 500 represents the values of the 500 largest listed US companies that are listed on the NYSE, Nasdaq and NYSE Amex. The index is calculated according to market capitalization and is one of the most important in the world. Since the index shows the performance of particularly important companies, it is considered a good indicator for the entire US stock market and more modern than the Dow Jones. In the S&P 100, the 100 largest values from the S&P are again 500 summarized.
As early as 1923 , Standard Statistics published a stock index with 233 once a week values. This index was expanded and published daily for the first time in 1926. In 1941 the company merged with Poor’s Publishing and the index comprised 416 values. In its current form, the index has been known since 1957. The S&P 100 was developed by the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) in 1976 and adopted by Standard & Poor's a few years later.
